I was hired by a private client to create a game as a birthday gift for his girlfriend in order to relay, through the game, that they would be going to travel to Rome in real life.
The game was a third person exploration game, which consisted of three consecutive levels set in Paris, Venice and Rome. In each level, you would encounter puzzles and characters which would guide the player through the level.
Some of the puzzles in the game worked hand in hand with a booklet created by my employer, which contained real world puzzles to be solved to obtain clues of what to do next, or in some cases revealed the map of the next level.
The characters were self inserts of my employer and his girlfriend, as well as their pets and plushies made into real characters. All the locations were places they had previously been before.
While my employer wrote the story and created real world puzzles to accompany the game, I was responsible for designing and developing the game from the ground up. I programmed all the movement and interactions, created many cinematics as well as visual effects and shaders using Unity's shadergraph in the Universal Render Pipeline.
As my first job, I quite enjoyed the experience overall. I used Trello to organize my tasks to be able to create all three levels with a lot of content. I listened thoroughly to feedback from my employer and made all necessary changes. In the end, both my employer and his girlfriend were very happy with the final game.
